Getting Started

Treat this course as you would any regular college level course. The material is in a different format than what you may be used to, but you will still be held accountable for the information.

  • If you have a question, please ask. You will have the opportunity to participate in class discussions on the web. I hope you will feel comfortable expressing your perspectives and personal experiences in this manner.  Please see the section on the syllabus about proper net etiquette.
  • Follow the schedule on the syllabus. Tests will only be available during the specified times, so keep up on your reading and assignments.
  • If you are having difficulty with the material or the way it is being presented, please let me know. I would also appreciate comments on things that you like about the course, so I can continue to use and improve them. Thanks!

Minimum computer requirements

  • Because this is an internet course, and you are reading this page, you probably already have most of the computer knowledge you'll need to complete the course. Here are a few suggestions:
    • Internet connection of at least 56K modem speeds.
    • Sound card and speakers
    • To guarantee proper viewing of this web site, I recommend downloading the most recent version of your favorite internet browser. Older versions of these browsers may also work, but I recommend the latest version of Micrsoft Internet Explorer, or Firefox.
    • Adobe Flash browser plugin.
    • Powerpoint 2000 or at least the Powerpoint Viewer (free)
      • The powerpoint lectures contain additional examples, personal experiences, media, and humor that you won't find by reading the textbook. When you see the following icon, click on it to hear the sound clip, in Windows Media format
        Try it now! speaker icon
      • When you see a movie icon in the Powerpoint slides movie icon, there is a video that you can watch (unless it is labeled "in-class".  Certain video is not available for viewing over the web).  To view the streaming video, you'll need the free Windows media player
